Abilities

Philosophy

| Bleeding | Lose 4 HP per turn; can be stacked up to 3 times | 3 turns || Vulnerable | Takes +20% damage from all sources | 2 turns || Warding | Absorbs next 15 damage | 1 use or 2 turns | A Ground Guild player who trains with Water Guild members may learn to heal. A Fire Guild player who completes Energy quests may learn to buff allies. Guilds are not walls — they are starting points. The community builds itself.

"The Tree did not give Root one kind of root. It gave Root all of them."

How Abilities Are Acquired

Source How It Works
Birth Roll At character creation, roll 2d6 — receive 1 ability from your guild's Squire pool
Level-Up Roll At each tier ceremony, roll 2d6 — receive 1 ability from that tier's pool
Quest Reward Completing quests unlocks specific abilities as rewards — the most reliable way to acquire rare or cross-guild abilities
Training / Sparring Any player who knows an ability can teach it to another player of equal or lower tier

There is no ability shop. You earn, you roll, you learn from each other.

Ability Slots

Tier Active Ability Slots Stored Scrolls
Squire 4 Unlimited (Scroll Library)
Warrior 6 Unlimited
Mage 8 Unlimited

Abilities not in your active slots are stored as Ability Scrolls in your personal library. Scrolls can be swapped in before a battle, traded, or gifted.

Mastery Tokens

If you roll an ability you already possess at level-up, you receive a Mastery Token for that ability instead of a duplicate: - Increases the ability's power by 25% - Lowers its SP cost by 5 - Upgrades the ability's card border to the next rarity tier

Each ability can be Mastered once.

Status Effects Reference

Cross-Element Abilities

Ability Progression — Example

Here is how a single player's ability set might develop naturally over time:

At Birth (Ground Guild, 2d6 = 7): - Fortify (birth roll — Earth Squire ability)

Through Early Quests (Squire): - Soil Mend (Side Quest reward) - Mud Throw (Training with a Ground Guild friend) - Cleansing Rain (Learned from a Water Guild player during cross-guild sparring)

Squire → Warrior Level-Up (2d6 = 4): - Earth Pulse (tier roll — Earth Warrior ability)

Through Warrior Quests: - Boulder Smash (Tier Quest: Trial of the Gate) - Ember Will (Purchased scroll from a Fire Guild friend's market listing)

Warrior → Mage Level-Up (2d6 = 9): - Ancient Grove (tier roll — Earth Mage ability)

Through Final Quests and Mage Training: - Aether Stone (Final Quest: The Deep Root) - Root Bond (Completed cross-guild training with all four guilds) - Lifeline (Another Mage taught this in a training session)

Final active set (8 slots): Fortify, Soil Mend, Boulder Smash, Earth Pulse, Ancient Grove, Aether Stone, Cleansing Rain, Lifeline

This player is primarily an Earth fighter with healing and support — a build assembled through play and relationships, not a preset class.

Ability Scrolls and Trading

Every ability a player learns is stored as an Ability Scroll in their personal library. Scrolls can be:

  • Equipped — slotted into your active set before battle
  • Traded — sold or gifted to another player in the Guild Market for $ROOT5
  • Taught — the basis of a Training Session (the teacher keeps their Scroll; the student receives a copy)

Scrolls do not expire and are not destroyed when taught. Teaching an ability costs the teacher only time.

Mage-tier Aether abilities cannot be traded as scrolls — they must be learned directly, Mage to Mage, in a Training Session.

Ability Synergy

While abilities are individually powerful, certain combinations — used in sequence by the same player or coordinated across a team — produce effects beyond their individual power. This is Synergy: the art of sequencing abilities to amplify their total impact.

Same-Turn Synergy

Some ability combinations trigger bonus effects when used in the same turn:

Ability A Ability B Combined Effect
Any Buff ability Any Offense ability (same turn) Offense ability gains +10% damage
Any Debuff ability Any Offense ability (same turn) Offense ability ignores target's DEF bonus from buff
Root Snare (Rooted) Any Offense ability (same turn) +5 bonus damage (Rooted enemies cannot evade)
Splash (Soaked) Flame Toss or Cinder Burst Soaked target takes Burned even from abilities that normally don't apply it
Volt Dash (AGI buff) Thunder Clap or Chain Bolt +2 to the Stun/Chance roll

Cross-Turn Synergy

The status effects created by one ability can set up devastating follow-ups:

  • Soaked → Burned: A Fire ability applied to a Soaked target deals +25% damage (standard elemental counter).
  • Rooted → Charged: A Rooted target hit by a Charged ally takes +10% damage from that ally.
  • Weakened → Overload: A Weakened target has reduced STR, making Overload (which deals damage equal to target's current SP ÷ 10) deal proportionally more effective damage.
  • Charged stacks → Discharge: Each Charged stack consumed by Discharge adds +8 damage. Stacking 3 Charged before using Discharge is the standard Energy burst combo.

Team Synergy

In Team Battles and Raids, coordinating abilities across players produces compound effects:

Player 1 Uses Player 2 Uses Combined Effect
Fuel the Fire (Fire) Forge Stance (Fire) Student gains +6 STR instead of +4 for 2 turns
Signal Boost (Energy) Any high-SP ability Target's next ability costs −5 SP in addition to its normal cost
Mist Veil (Water) Any Water Offense Mist Veil's dodge bonus stacks with Water's Tidal Recovery for a highly evasive Water build
Root Snare (Ground) Flood Step (Water) Flood Step against a Rooted target deals bonus +10 damage

Synergy and Mastery

A Mastery Token on an ability (see Mastery Tokens) improves its synergy contributions — the ability's synergy bonus damage is increased by 25% when that ability is part of a combo.

"No ability stands alone. Every technique is a conversation." — Energy Guild training saying## Ability Amplification

Beyond Mastery Tokens, there are additional ways to push an ability beyond its base potential. These Amplification methods are available only to players who have invested time in the community — through guild service, cross-guild training, or Mage-tier Aether work.

Guild Forging

Each guild maintains a Forge — a place where abilities can be permanently enhanced by attuning them to the guild's elemental essence. A player may forge-amplify one ability per tier (Squire, Warrior, Mage — so 3 total across their career).

Guild Forge Name Effect Cost
Ground The Deep Press Target ability gains +3 DEF when used 50 $ROOT5 + 5 Rootbark
Fire The Ember Anvil Target ability deals +4 bonus damage if it is not a heal 50 $ROOT5 + 3 Obsidian Shard
Water The Still Pool Target heal ability restores +8 additional HP 50 $ROOT5 + 3 Tidewater Vial
Energy The Static Loom Target ability's SP cost reduced by 3 50 $ROOT5 + 3 Storm Crystal

To use a guild forge, the player must be at least Warrior tier and must have completed that guild's Tier Quest (the forging ritual itself is an additional unlock from the Guild Quartermaster). A forged ability displays a small guild crest icon on its card.

Aether Infusion (Mage Only)

Mage-tier players may permanently infuse one of their ability scrolls with Aether from the Tree of Life. This is a one-time ritual that does not consume the ability but binds the Aether to the scroll permanently.

Aether Infusion Effect: - The infused ability's elemental modifier improves by one step: a counter-element 1.25 becomes 1.50; a neutral 1.00 becomes 1.15; a weak 0.80 becomes 0.90. - The scroll gains a faint glow visible to other Mages. - Cost: The Mage loses WIS - 3 for 72 hours (this stacks with the WIS penalty from Aether Gifting, but the total penalty cannot exceed WIS - 6).

A Mage may infuse a maximum of 2 abilities across their entire career. The decision is permanent — an infused scroll cannot be traded or un-infused.

Cross-Training Bonus

When a player learns an ability from a player of a different guild through a Training Session (not by scroll purchase), they gain a small bonus with that ability:

  • +2% damage or +2% healing for that ability (whichever is relevant).
  • This bonus stacks with Mastery Tokens and Forging bonuses.
  • The bonus is recorded on the ability's scroll and persists even if the training partner changes guilds or leaves the game.

This mechanic encourages exactly what the ROOT Kingdom philosophy describes: learning from each other, not just buying scrolls.

"A scroll gives you words. A teacher gives you the meaning behind them." — Water Guild training proverb

Ability Synthesis

At Warrior tier and above, players gain access to Ability Synthesis — a process by which two compatible abilities can be combined to produce a new, more powerful ability. Synthesis is irreversible and permanent; the two input abilities are consumed in the process.

How Synthesis Works

  1. Select two abilities from your Ability Scroll Library. Both must be the same tier or lower than your current tier.
  2. Combine them at a Synthesis Altar — a station in each Guild Village's Training Arena (added as part of the Basic Arena Expansion upgrade).
  3. The result is a new ability drawn from a shared pool of synthesis outcomes. The new ability is always one tier higher than the input abilities (Squire inputs → Warrior output, Warrior inputs → Mage output).

Synthesis Rules

Rule Detail
Tier Match Both input abilities must be the same tier
Elemental Compatibility Abilities from opposing elements (Fire/Water, Earth/Energy) cannot be synthesized
Same-Type Preference Two abilities of the same type (Offense + Offense, Heal + Heal) produce a stronger result than mixed-type combinations
Cooldown Synthesis takes one in-game period (30 minutes real time)
Limit A player may synthesize 3 abilities per week

Example Synthesis Outcomes

Input A Input B Output Ability Type SP Power Effect
Stone Fist (Earth Squire) Ember Strike (Fire Squire) Rootfire Strike Offense 12 24 Damage + applies Rooted on hit
Wave Strike (Water Squire) Spark Strike (Energy Squire) Tidal Surge Offense 14 22 Damage + applies Charged on hit
Soil Mend (Earth Squire) Cleansing Rain (Water Squire) Spring Revival Heal 18 +35 HP Heals self and one ally

"Two roots grow stronger when they intertwine. But not every root is meant to bind." — Synthesis Altar inscription

Note: Synergy effects from the Ability Synergy section still apply to synthesized abilities. The synthesized ability inherits the elemental affinity of its dominant input ability for synergy purposes.

Mage-tier restriction: Mage-tier abilities cannot be synthesized — their power is too closely bound to the Aether. Synthesis is limited to Squire and Warrior tiers only.
