The Four Guilds

Overview

Every player belongs to one of four Guilds, each tied to an elemental force of the ROOT Kingdom. Guilds are not just teams — they are cultures, training traditions, and ways of life. Guild membership shapes a player's abilities, their Sprite affinities, and their role in guild warfare.

Guild Elemental Counter System

Guilds have elemental strengths and weaknesses. When battling players or Sprites from a counter guild, damage is modified:

Guild Strong Against Weak Against
Ground Energy Water
Water Fire Energy
Fire Ground Water
Energy Water Ground

Counter Bonus: Abilities used against a countered guild deal +25% damage.
Counter Penalty: Abilities used against your counter guild deal −20% damage.
Neutral: No modifier against guilds not in your counter chain.

Example: A Fire player using a fire ability against a Ground player deals +25% damage. That same player attacking a Water player deals −20%.

Ground Guild

Symbol: A stone fist clenching a root
Territory: Southern ROOT Kingdom
Element: Earth, stone, wood, growth
Philosophy: Endurance over speed. Ground Guild members are builders, farmers, and fortress defenders. They believe strength comes from patience and deep roots.

Stat Bonuses at Birth: - +10 HP - +2 DEF - +1 STR

Guild Strengths: - Highest base HP of all guilds - Best defensive abilities - Bonus efficiency growing Sprites in the Guild Greenhouse - Passive: Earthen Resolve — when HP drops below 30%, DEF increases by 3

Guild Greenhouse Specialty: Ground Guild's greenhouse grows Sprites 10% faster than other guilds.

Notable Sprite Affinity: Seedagon / Rootagon (see 06-sprites.md)

Fire Guild

Symbol: A flame curled around a sword
Territory: Eastern ROOT Kingdom
Element: Flame, heat, forge, will
Philosophy: Action over waiting. Fire Guild members are warriors, crafters, and trailblazers. They believe strength is forged in pressure and sharpened by conflict.

Stat Bonuses at Birth: - +5 HP - +3 STR - +2 AGI

Guild Strengths: - Highest base attack power - Fastest ability cooldowns - Best offensive ability damage scaling - Passive: Burning Momentum — landing 3 hits in a row increases next ability damage by 15%

Guild Greenhouse Specialty: Fire Guild can hatch Sprites that have the Ember trait, granting them bonus fire damage.

Notable Sprite Affinity: Onyx / Obsidia

Water Guild

Symbol: A wave flowing through an open hand
Territory: Western ROOT Kingdom
Element: Water, tide, healing, flow
Philosophy: Adaptation over rigidity. Water Guild members are healers, strategists, and long-game players. They believe the strongest force is one that finds every crack.

Stat Bonuses at Birth: - +5 HP - +2 WIS - +2 DEF - +1 SP (Spirit Points)

Guild Strengths: - Best healing abilities in the game - Highest SP pool (more ability uses per battle) - Abilities can apply the Soaked status (reduces target's Fire ability damage by 15% for 2 turns) - Passive: Tidal Recovery — regain 5 HP at the start of each turn if SP is above 50%

Guild Greenhouse Specialty: Water Guild's Sprites are born with the Ripple trait, giving them a once-per-battle 10% heal on the owning player.

Notable Sprite Affinity: Fernad / Fernguard

Energy Guild

Symbol: A lightning bolt spiraling into a circle
Territory: Northern ROOT Kingdom
Element: Lightning, storm, static, mind
Philosophy: Connection over isolation. Energy Guild members are communicators, tacticians, and the fastest thinkers on the field. They believe everything is connected, and speed of thought is the ultimate weapon.

Stat Bonuses at Birth: - +8 SP - +3 AGI - +2 WIS

Guild Strengths: - Highest AGI — almost always goes first in battle - Abilities can apply Charged status to allies (next ability deals +10% damage) - Strong buff/debuff utility kit - Passive: Static Field — any enemy ability that misses charges the Energy player's next attack (+5% damage, stacks up to 3 times)

Guild Greenhouse Specialty: Energy Guild can accelerate Sprite hatching by spending extra SP on daily tending (doubles progress that day, once per week).

Notable Sprite Affinity: Arbitos / Timberward

Guild Duties

Every player has obligations to their guild beyond personal advancement:

Duty Description Reward
Daily Greenhouse Tending Water at least one Sprite seed per day +5 XP, Sprite growth progress
Gate Defense Rotation All active players must take at least 1 gate battle per week +10 Guild Points
Training Contribution Higher-tier players must offer at least 1 training session per week +5 XP to both parties
Patrol Duty Walk the village border (in-game action) to prevent surprise raids +2 Guild Points

Guild Points accumulate on the Guild Scoreboard and are spent on raid rights (see 09-guild-warfare.md).

Guild Hierarchy

While the Guild Counsel represents each guild's governance, the day-to-day function of guild life depends on a informal rank structure that has developed organically across generations of players. Ranks are earned through activity, skill, and contribution — not appointed.

Rank Requirements Responsibilities Title
Initiate New player, first 3 in-game days Attend orientation, tend at least 1 Sprite seed [Initiate]
Active Member 3+ days in guild, completed first Side Quest Participate in daily duties, Gate Battles, guild life (no suffix)
Guard 50+ XP earned, participated in 5 Gate Battles Voluntary gate defense rotations, mentoring Initiates [Guard]
Defender Reached Warrior tier, 20+ Gate Battle wins Lead gate defense, coordinate raid alerts [Defender]
Champion Reached Mage tier, nominated by Counsel Lead raid parties, represent guild in Grand Counsel discussions [Champion]
Counsel Member Elected by guild vote (see 10-counsel-structure.md) Full governance duties [Counsel]
Guild Master Counsel vote, majority approval Ultimate guild authority, tie-breaking vote in Counsel [Guild Master]

Rank Interaction

  • Initiates are exempt from Guild Duties — their only obligation is to complete their first Side Quest within 7 in-game days.
  • Guards and above are expected to fulfill weekly Guild Duty obligations.
  • Champions are automatically exempt from Patrol Duty (their raid leadership role counts as equivalent contribution).
  • Counsel Members and Guild Master are exempt from all duties — governance is their contribution.

Guild Master

The Guild Master is not a separate tier above Mage — it is a governance role a Mage can hold. A Guild Master can still participate in battles, raids, and all game mechanics. The role's power is in governance, not personal ability. Any Mage can run for Guild Master when the position is vacant. There is no limit on how many terms a Guild Master can serve.

"Rank is what you do when no one is watching." — Ground Guild saying

Inter-Guild Relations

The Guilds are not isolated fiefdoms. While Gate Battles and Raids define the competitive edge of guild life, the daily rhythm of the ROOT Kingdom depends on cooperation, trade, and a web of diplomatic customs that have grown up between the four Guild Territories over generations.

The Concord of Elements

The four Guilds operate under an unwritten but universally respected framework known as the Concord of Elements — a set of diplomatic customs governing how guilds interact during times of peace. While Gate Battles provide structured competition, the Concord ensures that guilds remain interconnected through trade, joint ceremonies, and shared cultural events.

Key principles of the Concord: - Shared Festivals: Each guild hosts an annual celebration open to all guilds (see the Rooting Festival in 14-chad.md). - Trade Corridors: Designated Gate routes are reserved for inter-guild trade caravans, ensuring safe passage of goods between territories. - Mutual Aid: In the event of a natural Aether disruption or external threat, all four guilds are expected to offer aid to the affected territory.

Truce Days

Once per season (four times per in-game year), the Grand Counsel declares a Truce Day — a 24-hour period during which: - All Gate Battles are suspended. - Raids cannot be declared. - Guilds are encouraged to host joint training sessions and cross-guild events.

Truce Days are announced by the Grand Counsel at least 3 in-game days in advance. Violating a Truce Day (declaring a raid or accepting a Gate Battle challenge during the window) results in a 200 GP penalty deducted from the offending guild's scoreboard.

Inter-Guild Trade

Players may trade items, $ROOT5, and Sprite seeds with members of other guilds through the Market Cross — a neutral marketplace that appears in the border towns between territories during Truce Days. The Market Cross is staffed by automated contracts and does not collect guild fees.

Outside of Truce Days, inter-guild trade is still permitted but subject to a 5% cross-guild tariff collected by the seller's guild fund. This tariff funds joint infrastructure projects maintained by the Grand Counsel.

Guild Rivalries

While formal diplomacy keeps the peace, informal rivalries between guilds are a beloved part of ROOT Kingdom culture:

Rivalry Flavor
Ground ↔ Fire The eternal builder-versus-forge debate: which guild's architecture is superior? Lively debates break out at every joint summit.
Water ↔ Energy A philosophical rivalry — flow versus speed. Water advocates say Energy acts without thought; Energy advocates say Water over-plans.
Ground ↔ Water A practical rivalry over territory. Border disputes between Ground and Water territories are the most common source of minor grievances filed with the Counsel.
Fire ↔ Energy A friendly competition for the fastest-growing guild. Both guilds measure success by activity metrics and rarely agree on which metrics matter.

These rivalries are kept friendly by tradition. The Counsel will intervene if any rivalry escalates into unsportsmanlike conduct (see 10-counsel-structure.md).

"Four roots, one tree. The Guilds may compete, but the Aether knows no guild." — Grand Counsel proverb

Guild Architecture & Territory

Each Guild Territory is more than a collection of buildings — it is a living expression of the guild's elemental identity, shaped by generations of players who have left their mark on the land.

Ground Guild — The Verdant Halls

The Ground Guild Village centers on The Verdant Halls, a sprawling complex of living stone and grown timber where guild meetings are held beneath a canopy of ancient roots. The walls are living bark, pulsing gently with Aether, and the Halls' central chamber features a massive root-table where the Guild Master presides. Beneath the village lies The Deep Gardens, a network of underground terraces fed by natural Aether springs where rare herbs and healing flora are cultivated year-round. The Rootwork Market serves as the village's trade hub, a network of covered bridges spanning a moss-filled ravine where Ground Guild merchants conduct commerce with visitors from other territories.

Fire Guild — The Kiln and the Ashen Quarter

The Fire Guild Village is built around The Kiln, a massive volcanic structure at the village's heart where guild ceremonies are held and advanced forging techniques are taught. The Kiln's exterior glows with a constant, warm radiance visible from miles away. Surrounding it is The Ashen Quarter, a district of compact, heat-resistant dwellings built from cooled volcanic rock and obsidian tiles. The Cinder Terrace overlooks the volcanic landscape and serves as the primary gathering place for celebrations, its edge lined with benches of forged iron from which spectators watch Gate Battles and raids unfold in the distance.

Water Guild — The Coral Libraries and the Tideweave Plaza

The Water Guild Village is defined by The Coral Libraries, a series of interconnected chambers built from living coral that grows organically along the water village's stone foundations. The Libraries contain the largest collection of knowledge in the ROOT Kingdom — histories, training manuals, and guild records — with water currents carrying information between chambers. At the village center lies The Tideweave Plaza, a circular gathering space where the water surface mirrors the sky and the four guilds' banners are reflected below. The plaza serves as the site for Truce Day gatherings and cross-guild diplomacy. The Aquifer Gardens are terraced gardens fed by underground springs, where water sprites and healing herbs are cultivated in pools that glow with soft Aether light.

Energy Guild — The Circuit Bazaar and the Aetherwalk Promenade

The Energy Guild Village is anchored by The Circuit Bazaar, a bustling open-air market built into a natural stone amphitheater where merchants sell goods, traders exchange information, and Aether-based innovations are demonstrated. The bazaar's stalls are connected by a network of glowing Aether conduits that light the pathways at night. The Aetherwalk Promenade is a raised walkway of stone and steel that circles the village at its highest point, offering panoramic views of the surrounding territory. It is the preferred spot for Energy Guild players to observe Aether currents and plan strategy.

"Every stone tells a story. Every market hums with purpose. This is how the Guilds endure — not by walls, but by the lives built within them."
