World Lore — The ROOT Kingdom

The Tree of Life

At the center of the ROOT Kingdom stands the Tree of Life — an ancient, boundless entity older than memory. Its roots stretch beneath every guild village, its canopy touches the edge of the known sky. The Tree does not speak, but it breathes: a living pulse of energy called the Aether flows through its bark and roots, feeding the land, the Sprites, and all who walk within the Kingdom.

The Tree has five roots. Four roots feed the four Guilds. The Fifth Root runs deeper than all others — into a place no one has fully mapped. It is said that the Fifth Root feeds the Aether itself. Some Mages believe it connects to worlds beyond the Kingdom. No one has followed it to its end and returned unchanged.

Root & Rooth — The Children of the Tree

Not everything born from the Tree of Life is a Sprite. Two beings emerged differently — shaped not just from Aether but from the Tree's deepest intention: Root and Rooth.

Root and Rooth are wooden beings. Their skin is bark. Their hair grows like canopy. The green lines tracing their faces and hands are living veins of Aether, still connected to the Tree that made them. They do not age the way creatures do — they grow, slowly, the way trees grow.

What sets them apart from every Sprite is will. Sprites are shaped by the Aether and follow its current. Root and Rooth were given a spark the Tree had never given before: the freedom to choose. Which guild to join. Which skills to learn. Whether to fight, to heal, to lead, or to explore. The Tree grew them and then let them go.

Every player in the ROOT Kingdom is Root or Rooth. When a new player arrives, the Tree births another. There is not one Root — there are many, as many as there are players. Each one is distinct, shaped by their choices and their guild, but all share the same wooden origin.

"The Tree has roots enough for everyone." — old ROOT Kingdom saying

The Aether

The Aether is the life force of the ROOT Kingdom. It is not merely energy — it is memory, intention, and growth made manifest. It flows invisibly through the soil, the water, the flame, and the wind.

  • Sprites are born from Aether seeds.
  • Mage-tier players can perceive, channel, and gift Aether.
  • Sap, the oldest Sprite, was crafted directly from Aether by the four elements before any other creature existed.
  • When a Sprite is minted to the blockchain, its Aether signature is locked into the ledger permanently.

Aether cannot be created — only channeled, gifted, or spent. A player who gifts Aether weakens themselves temporarily but strengthens their team.

The ROOT Kingdom

The ROOT Kingdom is divided into four Guild Territories arranged around the Tree of Life at its center. Each territory has:

  • A Guild Village with housing, markets, and the Guild Greenhouse.
  • A Training Arena at the village center.
  • A North Gate Battle Arena and a South Gate Battle Arena, each bordering a neighboring Guild's territory.

[ WATER GUILD ]—[TREE]—[ FIRE GUILD ]
                  |

North/South gates connect adjacent guilds. Every guild shares a border — and a battle arena — with two others.

Gate Guild A Guild B
North-1 Ground Fire
North-2 Ground Water
South-1 Fire Energy
South-2 Water Energy

(Diagonal guilds — Ground/Energy and Fire/Water — are rivals and share no direct gate. They can only meet in Grand Counsel or during special cross-Kingdom events.)

History

Before the Guilds, all who were born of the Tree were undivided. The Aether flowed freely and without form. In time, four great elemental forces — the Earthshaker, the Flamecaller, the Tidewarden, and the Stormweave — each claimed a root of the Tree and shaped the land around it into a Guild Territory.

Each elemental force planted the first Guild Greenhouse and grew the first Sprite. These four Sprites became the Guild Guardians, and their descendants are the Sprite companions players grow today.

The Fifth Root was never claimed. The elders call it the Root of Balance. Some say the next great Mage will follow it and bring a new era. Others warn that whatever lives at its end should stay undisturbed.

Fabled Locations of the Kingdom

Beyond the Guild Villages, Gates, and Training Arenas, each territory holds places of legend — locations every Root and Rooth knows by whispered name.

Ground Guild — The Whispering Bedrock

Beneath the Ground Village, root-carved tunnels descend into chambers no map accounts for. At the lowest reachable depth, Aether seeps through ancient cracks and the stone walls glow faintly green. Mages who meditate here report layered whispers — fragments from other times or perhaps other worlds. The Ground Counsel keeps the entrance sealed except for ceremonial use.

Fire Guild — The Smoldering Depths

Below the forge district, a natural fissure opens into a cavern of cooling magma vents and obsidian columns — heat unbearable below Warrior tier. Deep within, rock formations hum with Aether meeting molten stone. It is said that any Sprite of Fire that survives a night in the Depths may evolve with blue-touched flame. Obsidia itself is rumored to have walked these tunnels before evolution.

Water Guild — The Glacial Shelf

East of the Water Village, a constant mist hides the Glacial Shelf — a frozen plateau suspended over an underground river. Ancient ice layers trap Aether crystals from centuries past. Water Mages harvest fragments during the coldest months for Permafrost rituals. The Shelf is treacherous: thin ice and Aether-rich waters below that can freeze a Root's bark in seconds.

Energy Guild — The Storm Spire

North of the Energy Village, a single black rock spire rises above the plain, its peak perpetually wreathed in a self-sustaining storm. Lightning strikes the spire every fourteen seconds, never varying. The Spire predates the Guilds. Energy initiates touch its base during their Warrior ceremony; those who complete the pilgrimage carry a static charge in their Aether for life, granting their lightning abilities a fractional potency increase.

The Aether Currents

Beyond the Guild Territories, the Aether does not sit still — it flows. Invisible rivers of Aether energy thread beneath the soil of the ROOT Kingdom, connecting every Guild Greenhouse, every Gate Arena, and the Tree of Life itself into a single circulatory system. These currents are invisible to the naked eye but felt by every Root and Rooth, especially Mages, who describe them as a hum in the back of the mind.

Major Currents

Current Path Notable Effect
The Deep Root South Ground Territory → Tree of Life Carries raw, unrefined Aether. Grounds nearby Sprites.
The Ember Flow East Fire Territory → Tree of Life Warms the Aether. Speeds Sprite incubation in Fire greenhouses.
The Tide Run West Water Territory → Tree of Life Moistens the Aether. Increases healing potency near its path.
The Storm Thread North Energy Territory → Tree of Life Charges the Aether with static. Boosts AGI-based abilities within range.

Surface Signs

While the currents run underground, their presence sometimes reveals itself at the surface:

  • Aether pools — small, shimmering patches of light that appear after rain, especially near Guild Village borders. Standing in one restores 5 SP to any player who meditates there for one in-game hour.
  • Root-rings — circular patterns of glowing Aether visible in the soil around ancient trees. Walking the full circle grants a temporary +1 to the next turn order roll.
  • Storm-hum — a low-frequency vibration felt near the Energy Guild's borders. Energy Guild players report heightened awareness during these moments; all other guild players simply hear a faint buzzing.

"The Tree drinks from the roots, but the roots drink from the currents. Pull too hard and you feel it in your bones." — Wanderer's saying

Current Disruption

During large-scale battles or Raids, the local Aether current can be disrupted. A Raid that reaches the Village Center may temporarily knot the current beneath that guild's territory for up to 24 hours. While knotted:

  • Sprite incubation slows by 50% in the affected greenhouse.
  • All healing abilities in the territory deal −20% effective healing.
  • Gate Battles in the territory grant +50% Guild Points (the disruption amplifies competitive energy).

Knots resolve naturally once the conflict ends and the Aether settles. Guild Counsel members can expedite the process by performing a collective tending ritual at Chad's roots, which clears a knot in under 1 hour.

The Aether Convergence Shrines

Where two or more Aether Currents cross, the energy coalesces into permanent surface manifestations known as Convergence Shrines. Each confluence produces a distinct effect, shaped by the guild elements whose currents meet there. These shrines are neutral ground — any player of any guild may visit, and doing so once per in-game day grants a blessing.

Convergence Map

Confluence Currents Meeting Location Shrine Blessing
Deepmire Confluence Deep Root + Tide Run Southwest, Ground-Water border +2 DEF for next battle
Earthfire Confluence Deep Root + Ember Flow Southeast, Ground-Fire border +2 STR for next battle
Stormforge Confluence Ember Flow + Storm Thread Northeast, Fire-Energy border +2 AGI for next battle
Stormtide Confluence Storm Thread + Tide Run Northwest, Water-Energy border +2 WIS for next battle

Shrine Ritual

At each shrine stands a carved stone plinth, worn smooth by generations of pilgrims. To receive a blessing, a player must:

  1. Place one hand on the plinth.
  2. Meditate silently for one full turn cycle (or approximately 30 seconds of real time).
  3. The shrine pulses with the colour of its dominant currents, and the blessing takes effect.

Blessings last for a single battle or 1 hour of real time, whichever comes first, and do not stack with another shrine blessing taken the same day.

The Center Convergence

At the exact centre of all four currents — beneath the Tree of Life — lies the Aether Heart, the point where all four paths meet. This is not a shrine but a constant, low-grade Aether fountain. Standing within the Tree\s inner root circle restores 2 SP per minute to any Mage who meditates there. Non-Mages feel only a deep calm.

The Fifth Root

The Fifth Root is the deepest and most mysterious of the Tree of Life's roots. While the four Guild roots feed the Guild Territories with their respective elements, the Fifth Root runs in a direction no map has ever recorded — downward, inward, and elsewhere. It does not feed a guild. It feeds the Aether itself.

What the Fifth Root Is

The Fifth Root is not a path through the earth. It is a dimension of pure Aether — a space where the energy that flows through the Kingdom is born. No Sprite, Root, or Rooth has ever followed it to its source and returned unchanged. The few Mages who have attempted to trace it with Aether divination report the same thing: the deeper they go, the less sense their senses make. Colors lose their names. Sound becomes texture. Time folds.

What Lives at Its End

No one knows. Some traditions say the Fifth Root ends at the Root of Origin — the point where the first Aether was breathed into existence by the Tree of Life. Others say it loops back on itself, a circle with no beginning. The Ancient Spirits are said to guard the threshold, though they have never been observed there.

What is confirmed: the Fifth Root is why the Aether never runs out. It is a living wellspring, not a finite resource. The Tree of Life draws from it constantly, the same way a heart draws from a lung — not consuming it, but sustaining the flow.

The Fifth Root and the Player

For players, the Fifth Root exists as a lore mystery and an aspirational horizon. It features in:

  • The Fifth Root Quest (see 12-quests.md) — the only content that brings players close to the Fifth Root's influence.
  • Aether Gifting — when a Mage gifts Aether, a tiny fraction of that energy originates from the Fifth Root. The deeper a Mage's understanding of the Fifth Root, the more efficiently they can channel it.
  • The Convergence Shrines (see The Aether Convergence Shrines) — each shrine is a point where a Guild root's Aether intersects with the Fifth Root's flow, which is why the confluences produce distinct elemental blessings.

"The Fifth Root has no direction. It is not north, south, up, or down. It is simply what makes everything else possible." — Unsigned fragment found in the Ground Guild's sealed tunnels

The Aether Wellspring

Beneath the roots of the Tree of Life, far below even the deepest Guild Territories, lies the Aether Wellspring — the primal source from which all Aether in the ROOT Kingdom originates. It is not a pool, nor a spring in the conventional sense. It is a presence: a vast, slow pulse of raw Aether that beats at the center of the earth like a second heart.

What It Is

The Wellspring is the point where Aether first entered the material world. It is older than the Tree, older than the Guilds, older than Root and Rooth. Every Aether Current that flows beneath the kingdom traces its origin back to the Wellspring, and every Convergence Shrine is a distant echo of its power.

The Wellspring itself is inaccessible to living beings. No one has ever reached it — the pressure of the earth above, the density of ancient Aether, and the sheer age of the place make it inhospitable to anything not born of the Tree. Only the Tree of Life itself connects to the Wellspring directly, drawing raw Aether up through its roots and distributing it through the Currents.

Signs of the Wellspring

Despite being inaccessible, the Wellspring occasionally manifests at the surface:

  • Aether Surges — Rare moments when the Wellspring's pulse strengthens, visible as a wave of light that travels through every Aether Current simultaneously. Surges last a few seconds and are felt by every Root and Rooth in the kingdom. During a Surge, all healing abilities are amplified by +20% and all debuffs are momentarily suspended.
  • The Deep Hum — A low, resonant vibration that some Mages can hear when they press their ears to the ground in certain locations. The Deep Hum is the sound of the Wellspring pulsing far below. It is louder near Ground Guild territory, where the roots run closest to the surface.
  • Root Echoes — Occasionally, a patch of soil will briefly show the faintest image of the Wellspring's light — a golden glow that pulses once and vanishes. Root Echoes are considered auspicious and are sometimes sought out by seekers of wisdom.

Why It Matters

The Wellspring is the reason the Grand Counsel maintains the Aether Currents so carefully. If the Wellspring were ever disrupted — by a catastrophic Raid, a prolonged knot, or some unknown force — the entire kingdom's Aether supply would begin to fail. This is why the Counsel's most sacred duty is the protection of the Currents: they are the veins, and the Wellspring is the heart.

The Tree drinks from a well no eye has seen. Guard the roots, and the root will guard you. — Ancient fragment, translated by the Water Guild Archivists

The Aether Seasons

The ROOT Kingdom experiences Aether Seasons — cyclical shifts in the Aether's dominant character that last approximately 84 in-game days. Unlike weather seasons, Aether Seasons are felt rather than seen: a subtle change in the hum of the Currents, a shift in the color of Aether motes, a different resonance when Mages channel their power.

There are four Aether Seasons, each aligned with one of the four elemental guilds.

The Four Aether Seasons

Season Element Aether Color Effects
Rootbloom Ground Deep forest green All Ground-affinity abilities cost -10% SP. Sprite incubation in Ground Greenhouses speeds up by 15%. Earth-based healing items restore +10% HP.
Embervein Fire Fiery orange-red All Fire-affinity abilities deal +10% damage. Burn/DoT effects last +1 turn. Fire Guild Gate Battles grant +15% Guild Points.
Tideflow Water Shimmering blue All Water-affinity abilities heal +10% HP. Water-based debuffs have +20% chance to apply. Water Guild training yields +10% XP.
Stormvein Energy Crackling yellow All Energy-affinity abilities have +10% Critical Hit chance. AGI-based turn order rolls gain +1. Energy Guild Raids move 10% faster.

Seasonal Transitions

The transition between Aether Seasons lasts exactly one in-game day, known as Intertide. During Intertide:

  • All Aether Currents pulse in unison at midnight, creating a visible wave of light.
  • Every player receives a Seasonal Blessing — a temporary buff matching the incoming season.
  • The Convergence Shrines emit a harmonic chime heard across the Kingdom.
  • Chad's Aether veins glow with all four colors simultaneously.

Seasonal Festivals

Each Aether Season has an associated festival:

  • Rootbloom Festival (Ground Guild) — The Stone Singing: Mages channel Aether through ancient cracks at the Whispering Bedrock.
  • Embervein Festival (Fire Guild) — The Forge Night: A 24-hour period where Smoldering Depths vents glow brightest.
  • Tideflow Festival (Water Guild) — The Ice Mirror: Water Mages create a massive ice mirror at the Glacial Shelf.
  • Stormvein Festival (Energy Guild) — The Lightning Dance: Energy Mages ascend the Storm Spire to catch lightning.

The Season of Balance

Rarely, the Wellspring aligns perfectly with all four elements, creating a fifth brief season called The Verdant Moment, lasting only 3 in-game days. During this time all four season effects are active, the Fifth Root's energy is closest to the surface, and the Tree produces a single Verdant Bloom — a legendary healing item.

The seasons do not change the Tree. They reveal what was always there. — Ancient Spirit of Earth
